I apologize for the long hiatus, but I was in serious need of some R&R after two months of non-stop traveling! After Michael and I completed our Grand Adventure, I hopped over to America for a quick visit with family and friends. Being home was wonderful. I gorged myself on shrimp & grits and avocado toast, road tripped to Charleston and saw family along the way, and spent my last few weeks in my childhood home. I honestly didn’t realize how much I’d missed it all until I was there and it felt like no time had passed at all.
To tell you the truth, it was actually really hard for me to come back to Thailand this time. When I saw all my friends graduating, scoring these incredible jobs and moving in with significant others, I admittedly felt a twinge of jealousy. I was also feeling pretty “out of the loop” in a lot of ways. Of course technology is great for keeping in touch, but it’s really hard being SO far away and I sometimes forget that time keeps passing even when I’m not there. Once I arrived in Lampang, however, I quickly settled back into my routine and remembered all the reasons I had wanted to stay in the first place.
There are also a lot of new “plot twists” this time around. For example, we got a fifth American teacher. His name is Tim and we’ve had fun introducing him to the good, the bad and the just plain hilarious aspects of Thai culture. I’ve gone mobile and gotten my own motorbike to be able to explore a bit more of the city. We discovered a new coffee shop that sells mini bagels (which is a huge accomplishment). I also have a whole new group of almost 900 students this semester! They have been fantastic so far and I’m excited to get to know as many of them as I can over the next few months.
I’m so grateful to have so much to look forward to this semester and I’m definitely going to make the most of it! My roommate, Brittney, and I are already planning an island-hopping trip at the end of July, as well as weekend trips to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phitsanulok.
THANK YOU to those who have been following my adventures over the last eight months. Looking forward to four more in this wonderful country!
